Sunshine Coast - a brave new world 07/15/2011
I was recently interviewed by the Maroochy Journal about the future of the Sunshine Coast. The published interview is included below. One of the most interesting questions was: "As a society are we coping with the rapid technological advancements? How is it best to keep up to date?" My response to these questions (which were not published due to space) is: Perhaps not. There are emerging issues that I fear people will not cope with well – genetic engineering, artificial intelligence, and the changing nature of what is means being human. From history, I have learnt that people need to remain curious and hopeful about the future which drives their motivation to keep learning and adapting. So as soon as people stop being curious they get left behind, get conquered, or curl up and die. In society people are so different that we will never grow and adapt at the same rate or to the same levels. There will always be early adopters, the mainstreamers, laggards and reactionaries.
